The Mittagskinder Foundation runs and supports various children’s centers. In the Foundation’s owned facilities in Neuwiedenthal and Kirchdorf-Süd and in the Rahlstedt-Oldenfelde children meet once a week to read together under the guidance of a reader. At the Kirchdorf-Süd children’s center, up to 18 children between the ages of 6 and 11 take part in these weekly offer.
During this time, three female readers are available for the children, so that work can be carried out in small groups. The aim is to support the children’s language development, but also to awaken their enjoyment of books in general. Every child has a reading card, in which they get a stamp after participating for one hour. When ten stamps are together, the card is full and the child can choose a book of his or her choice as a reward.
The offer for the participating children is free of charge. The total cost of the reading project for 2008 amounts to approx. 6.000 €. This includes the fees for the readers, the books required and the organisation of a reading competition.
Radio Hamburg ‘Hörer helfen Kindern’ and the Hanse Lounge donate 6.200 €. The project is thus secured for another year.
