Most of the children in the projects of the Mittagskinder Foundation come from socially disadvantaged families or have a migrant background. For this reason, the Mittagskinder Foundation also relies on educational impulses, such as the reading group, for its support. Once a week, children between the ages of 6 and 11 read together in the foundation’s own children’s center in Neuwiedenthal and Kirchdorf-Süd under the guidance of female readers, who are usually students from the field of social education.
For each children’s center, three readers come to the children, so that they can work in small groups. One aim is to promote the children’s language development. On the other hand, the joy of the medium book is to be awakened according to the motto “The discovery of reading means the end of boredom”. The participating children receive a small reading pass. After each participation in the weekly reading hour there is a small stamp in this card, which has ten fields for it. When the card is fully stamped, the child may wish itself a book of own choice as a reward.
Participation in the reading groups is of course free of charge for the children. The total annual costs for this reading project amount to € 6.200, including the fees of the readers, the books required and the organisation of a reading competition with a prominent jury.
