“The Role of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Promoting the Rule of Law in International Relations

– The lecture will be held in English –

As guest speakers we are pleased to welcome H.E. Judge Vladimir Golitsyn, President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea Hamburg.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea represents a milestone in the development of international relations under the rule of law, not least because of the system for the settlement of intergovernmental disputes contained therein. At the heart of this system is the Hamburg-based International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, which has the task, among other things, of resolving disputes arising from the application and interpretation of the Convention. The Court has broad jurisdiction, including specific proceedings, such as applications for interim relief and immediate release of ships. In addition, the court and its chamber for seabed disputes may give legal opinions in certain cases. Since its establishment in 1996, the Tribunal for the Law of the Sea has not only played an important role in the peaceful settlement of intergovernmental disputes, but has also made a lasting contribution to the further development of international law.
